Nansen Winter Camp

Nansen Winter Camp can be chilly. Temperatures below minus 10 are not unusual in January and it is best to be prepared for minus 15. Add snow and wind on top, and it is obvious that that suitable clothing and equipment are fundamental to the experience. That being said, nothing should stop us from sitting outside by a fire camp on a clear, crisp evening under a starry sky. Particularly if we are well bundled.

When venturing outside, campers should have three layers. The inner layer should be wool. Imagine think woollen sweaters and long-johns. The mid-layer could be fleece or another layer of wool. Finally, the outer layer should be wind and preferable waterproof. Gore-tex is recommended. Many thin layers are better than few thick ones. Sometimes we are quite active and having several layers offers flexibility according to the level of activity.

Here is what we recommend to bring:

  • At least three base layers in wool
  • Fleece or woollen mid-layer
  • Windproof jacket with hood
  • Windproof trousers
  • Woollen socks
  • Warm boots
  • Cap, gloves and scarf
  • Clothing for indoor (normal trousers/sweater, etc)
  • Toiletries
  • Indoor shoes/trainers
  • Backpack for daytrip
  • Thermos
  • Sunglasses
  • Plasters for blisters
